The
Aseana Percussion Unit is a total percussion unit
first formed in 1998 when 4 guys got together with
the thought of experimenting on blending the sounds
and rhythms of different types of drums and percussions.
The group has since then grown and now has 11 highly
skilled percussionists and musicians as its core
members.
If you think the drum is just an instrument that makes
a lot of noise - then you have not had the experience
of watching an Aseana Percussion Unit performance.
The extraordinary musical properties of each instrument
are skillfully explored and combined as a whole and
the effect is extraordinarily beautiful.
The
Instruments
The
instruments that are being used - just to name
a few - are the Brazilian Surdo, Indian Tabla and
Taviel, Malay Kompang and Gendang, the Chinese
Drum, the Trinidadian Steel Pan, the African Djembe/Talking
Drum and common household appliances.
Through the years and over many performances, the Aseana
Percussion Unit has made audiences realize that a performance
involving only percussions and drums, not only creates
wonderful music but is also an entertaining experience.
" Rhythm With
A Heart "
(
The Actor's Studio
Bangsar, Kuala
Lumpur 2001)
"Rhythm
With A Heart" was produced in
aid of the Spastic Children's Association of
Selangor & Federal Territory (SCAS) where
members of the Aseana Percussion Unit have
been conducting practical rhythm sessions on
a weekly basis with the kids based on a specially
designed programme called the Rhythm Interactive
Spastic Enabler's (R.I.S.E.) Programme.
A
special performance segment by children from the
SCAS was included in this show.
The show was divided into different segments that were
specifically designed and created around drums, percussions
and rhythms. A special segment involving the use of
everyday household items such as dustbins, " batu
tumbuk", kuali, brooms, etc, was also included
within the programme. The performance combines the
unique musical elements of the Malaysian ethnic drums,
percussions and rhythms together with many other Western
acoustic and percussive instruments.
Since then, The Aseana Percussion Unit have
been invited to perform at various events and festivals
such as The Sunrise Jazz Festival and The Penang
Jazz Festival.
"Colours
of Rhythm " (Penang-YTL
Arts Festival, Dewan Sri Pinang 2002)
" Colours
of Rhythms " - APU 1st released
album in the year 2002 featuring their brand
of world fusion music and was invited to perform
at the prestigious Rainforest World Music Festival,
held annually in Kuching, Sarawak. The group
was clearly one of the audience's favourites
as they moved and danced to the ferocious drumming
and rhythms of the group.
